In Travel by Continental StaffLeave a Comment

With over 1700 km of coastline, Portugal is internationally renowned for its beaches. The southernmost Algarve region in particular is famous for an abundance of sandy shores, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. From the bustling, to the picturesque, to the serene – there’s something for everyone. Without further ado, check out the top 5 beaches in southern Portugal!

5. Praia de Santo Antonio

Beginning at the mouth of the Guadiana River, Praia de Santo Antonio is the furthest east you can go in the Algarve before entering Spain. Although this beach can be a challenge to get to and offers little to no amenities, it has the warmest waters in the region and is definitely worth the journey. Since it’s the last tip of sand at the Spanish-border end of the Algarve, a lot of Spanish day trippers and fishermen can be spotted along the way there.

4. Praia da Falesia

An endless stretch of sand, Praia da Falesia is surrounded by majestic red cliffs which provide a beautiful backdrop to the picturesque location. This golden sand beach begins at River Guadiana at Vila Real de Santo António and continues uninterrupted all the way to Manta Rota – stretching on for more than 6 km.

3. Praia Sao Rafael

Surrounded by spectacular limestone rock, Praia Sao Rafael is a picturesque beach located a short distance from CS Sao Rafael Hotel just outside Albufeira. The beach is close to the Ponte Pequena (Small Bridge) and Ninho das Andorinhas (Swallow’s Nest) – a great place to find fascinating rock formations. In peak tourist season the beach can become quite crowded, however, there are plenty of private bays and coves to be found.

2. Praia Dono Ana

Only a short drive from the main town centre of Lagos, one can find restaurants, amenities and parking in the vicinity.
